The collection consists of documentary and graphic materials. It is a source of information on personalities and subjects, both American and foreign, important to the history of film animation. While the collection includes copies of material dating from the beginnings of film animation at the end of the nineteenth century, original material is concentrated in the late 1970s and the 1980s. The collection's emphasis is not on original material, though, but in providing sources for the history of film animation through reproduction of early material and secondary sources in an accessible format. The largest amount of both documentary and graphic materials in the collection relate to Walt Disney and his studio and to Canemaker's own extensive creative activity.
